Govt. celebrates war victory keeping patriot Fonseka in prison
UNP M P Gayantha Karunatileke addressing a media briefing at the UNP media unit today (17) said , it is the most cruel irony that the Govt. has thought it fit to celebrate the first anniversary of the war victory against the LTTE on the 18th , keeping the true war Hero Gen. Fonseka (whom the Govt. itself acclaimed as the greatest war Hero immediately after the war was won) imprisoned , while pampering LTTE leaders like Karuna Amman , Daya Master , Pillayan and K P , the noted traitors who were responsible for the mass murders in the country.
The best way the Govt. could have celebrated the anniversary is by giving a pardon to General Fonseka without detaining him on flimsy grounds. In this month of Wesak , the month when Buddhists must show compassion and mercy towards all and hate towards none, it is most opportune for the Govt. to take this opportunity and release Fonseka burying hatred , vengeance and political difference it harbors against him . It is obvious to all that the General has been harassed by the Govt. based more on its political vendetta against him rather than for any serious wrong he has committed , he pointed out.
When the UNP and Opposition parties were accusing the Ministers of inefficiency , corruption and mismanagement earlier, the Govt. gave a deaf ear , but now its own Ministers are leveling the same charges against each other . Now , the new Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena is himself pointing out how his predecessor Nimal Siripala de Silva has virtually devastated the Health sector via alleged corruption , irregularities and inefficiency. Similarly ,the new Minister of Petroleum is criticizing the former Minister , of his own Govt. pointing out how he has made Petroleum Corporation suffer colossal losses. This pot calling the Kettle black is the present preoccupation of the Ministers of the new Cabinet with every Minister blaming the other and pointing out their massive bungling , while all of them are responsible and have together plunged the country into the worst economic despair. The Ministers and the Govt. have no worry, because the Govt. makes the people the scapegoats , and recoup the losses by imposing price hikes , tariff hikes and taxation on the people , he bemoaned.
