Minister Johnston Fernando crossed over to the government from the UNP as a result of threats by the President that he would be arrested on a charge for conspiring to assassinate the President says Mangala Samaraweera, co-spokesman for the apolitical Common Candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka.

Mr. Samaraweera revealed this at the press conference held at the propaganda office of the Common Candidate  producing information collected by the CID regarding the connections Mr. Johnston Fernando has had with three tiger terrorist suspects to make an attempt to assassinate the President.

Mr. Samaraweera also presented to the media information and audio recordings regarding telephone calls Mr. Johnston Fernando has had with the three tiger terrorist suspects. Mr. Samaraweera said tiger terrorists have given Rs.10 million to Mr. Johnston Fernando for the operation and he had talked to the mobile phone of a terrorist on 45 occasions.

There is information that the three terrorists, who are detained on orders from the Defense Secretary, were to be used for an attempt on General Fonseka’s life. However, it has been difficult to execute this plan of the government as a result of the terrorists making a confession before a magistrate said Mr. Samaraweera.
